Repeaters were introduced to increase or extend the distance between end nodes. A repeater consists of a transmitter and a receiver. When a signal is received by the repeater, it amplifies the signal and then retransmits. This effectively enables the signal to travel over a greater distance. Please note that repeaters are an outdated technology. A separate device is no longer needed to perform this functionality. Both active hubs and switches can be used in place of a repeater.
